History Of The Use Of Spirulina

The use of the Spirulina has been done since the ancient times. Spirulina grew in many parts of the world. Among the other places it was also found on the surface of the Mexico's Lake Texaco and Lake Chad. Spirulina was harvested, dried and eaten by the people of these regions since the ancient times.

If what the Spanish explorers say is to be believed then Spirulina was regularly served at the dinner tables of the Aztecs around the Lake Texaco when Hernando Cortez and his Conquistadors discovered them in 1519. The explorer Pierre Dangeard had also discovered Spirulina growing on the lakes of Eastern Africa's Rift Valley. He had seen that the huge flocks of flamingos survived on this blue-green algae. But his findings fell on the deaf ears and nobody cared about them. It was later that the Belgian botanist Jean Leonard supported his findings.

Once that the Spirulina was rediscovered by our botanists people slowly began to commercial it. People began to produce Spirulina on large scale so that the common people could reap their benefits and they could earn some good money. The initial Spirulina processing plant was set up by the French in 1969. The plant was named : Sosa Texaco. It was the only producer of Spirulina till 1976 when the Japan’s industrial giant Dainippon Ink and Chemicals opened a Spirulina production facility in Thailand. Next were Microbio in California and Cyanotech in Hawaii.

Today due to the many advantages of Spirulina it is been commercially grown in the US, China, India and Thailand.
